About Superfly!

Jeff Oulton of the Gunnison Angling Society and Scott Ratcliff of Colorado Trout Unlimited created the contest in 1989 and held the first event in 1990. Superfly continues to be a means of acquainting anglers with our local fisheries while having a good time and raising funds.

Superfly is the main fundraiser for Gunnison TU. Proceeds from the event are used for chapter operations, conservation projects, and youth education. Superfly helps fund youth education in Colorado by providing financial support for the annual Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp.  Our contributions will help to further develop the camp and provide scholarships for students. In addition to the youth camp and ongoing conservation projects, this year some of the funds are going to Gunnison County for the development the new river access and put in on the Gunnison River next to Garlic Mike’s. Shady Island is officially open and in use!  This is a huge opportunity to help shape the next century of fishing and river conservation.

Superfly is typically held on the first weekend after Labor Day at The Almont Resort. This year we pushed it till Sept 17th and 18th to allow for cooler temps and monsoonal rains to create a little temperature buffer for our fishery. Two-person teams compete to see who can catch the most inches of trout in one day using the two flies of their choice. Anglers fish a variety of water in the Gunnison Valley, including premier private water on the East River, Taylor River, and Gunnison River. Due to drought conditions and COVID concerns in 2020, we had to cancel the event. We are dedicated to protecting the anglers as well as the fisheries and low water and high temperatures equal stressed fish. Our monitors and teams are reminded to be diligent in observing water temps and avoiding stressing fish when the water temps hit 63°F. 2021 is proving to be another low water year but with recent rains and cooler late summer temps the fish should be hungry and active during our event and beyond.

We will not know the exact areas we will be able to fish until shortly before the contest starts. But not to worry, with the multitude of rivers and lakes in our area there are plenty of great angling opportunities. We have many fine local properties that have already agreed to allow us to use their river sections for our fishing beats. Besides the fishing contest, the Saturday night banquet which, is also available as a banquet only option, includes bucket raffles, silent auction, and door prizes. The entry fee is $600 per team. Each team member receives a nice fishing shirt and cap, and meals for the weekend event. The meals include a buffet breakfast, box lunch, and a steak barbecue dinner. We will be instituting social distancing and outdoor spaces as much as possible to mitigate COVID concerns

Friday night starts the fun with a reception and team registration. This is also when all the teams draw their beats (for both the morning and afternoon) and meet with the guides/monitors. Free beer and hors doeuvres are served. Saturday morning begins with a buffet breakfast. Team members then register their flies and meet up with their guides to go fishing for the day. Prizes are awarded Saturday night at the banquet for the top three teams, top rod, and the biggest fish.

New for 2021: We have switched to providing the winners with plaques commemorating their accomplishments and are using our generously donated specialty items in the auction to garner more funds for our projects.

Register online now! You can now register and pay online with a credit card. Teams can also enter by downloading the team entry form and mailing it with a check for $600 to the Gunnison Angling Society.
